This post for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is spoiler-free.
I’m sorry Tobey Maguire, and I’m sorry Tom Holland, but this animated Spider-Man movie tops all the live action versions that I’ve seen so far—I won’t apologise to Andrew Garfield because his versions are pure trash. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018, directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman) is refreshing as its protagonist is no longer Peter Parker (Chris Pine and Jake Johnson), but instead it focuses on a teenage boy called Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), who is struggling to learn about his powers and cope with the responsibility of being the new Spider-Man.
It isn’t just the story of this animated Spider-Man movie that makes it refreshing and unique to watch; the addition of the cool, trippy, and colour popping animations makes Spider-Verse a one of a kind movie that has never existed on the big screen until now. Although I watched this in 2D, the 3D effects were definitely visible, and at a certain point, I was wondering if I had bought tickets to a wrong screening of Spider-Verse.
Apart from the main story focus on Miles, Spider-Verse also features various Spider-(Wo)Man(s) characters from other alternate universes, and each character is brilliantly introduced in a montage.

The way their origin stories gets told feels really original, as it follows a comic book style. Every scene of the movie feels like I’m watching a comic book page come to life; pages and comic strips were literally flashing on the big screen as the movie plot progresses. Every Spider-(Wo)Man(s) character is easily likeable, and they all have their own quirks that make each one of them stand out from the other—Spider-Noir (Nicolas Cage) is one of my absolute favourite!
What makes this movie even better is the awesome soundtrack that complements the movie. The soundtrack composed by Daniel Pemberto features a compilation of funky hip-hop songs by various artistes.
Spider-Verse was perfect from the start to finish, and it’s definitely going onto my top 10 movies of 2018. I’m really excited to see the spin-off of Spider-Woman, and even more excited to see the budding romance between Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) and Miles happen.
